Image

The curious case of Intolerance

Once upon a time, in a tiny village by a river, lived a rich man. He made money by all means that was there to make and was keen on exploring other opportunities to make more of it. One such opportunity came knocking at his door. T he recent spate of floods in the country had driven all the fish from the dam down the river to the village and the rich man learnt about it. And he wanted to make the most of that fishy situation. He knew he could not do it alone. So, he went to the baron for help. The baron was one of the most respected people in the village. He was a businessman with a heart. He owned vast tracts of land and made good money with it by overworking the villagers who sought employment at his farms. Yet at the same time, he was willing to spend money, even if it was only a small percent of his earnings, on the welfare of his community. And that earned him some respect.  "This is our chance," the rich man told the baron. " Together, we can change the fate of ...

Purulia arms drop

On the night of 17th december 1995, an Latvian aircraft(Antonov An-26) dropped a large consignment of arms using parachutes (including thousands of AK-47s and millions of rounds of ammunition) in Purulia district in WB. The aircraft that had taken off from Varanasi, then proceeded to Kolkata before landing in Phuket, Thailand. Five days later, on Dec 22 1995, it breached Indian airspace again on its way to Karachi It was ordered to land in Mumbai where 6 men including a Peter Bleach were arrested and one, a Kim Davy, escaped.  Fuel for controversy: 1) Two months prior to the incident, the British secret service tipped the Indian government (then under Mr. PV . Narasimha Rao ) of such an operation for which the latter's reaction was to pass on the information to the WB government through a registered post (the slowest means of communication then). Inaction or conspiracy? Was the congress trying to destablise  the communist government which had been in power in WB for ov...

Rape - Don't punish it, prevent it !

What problems could threaten the integrity of a developing nation in the 21st century ? Poverty ? Corruption ? Inequality ? At present, these are not the issues that is troubling the biggest democracy in the World the most. Instead, it is men's age old disease called lust that is the rocking the boat this country is sailing on. Over the past few months, this lust has manifested in many different forms across the lengths and breadths of this country. The disease has consumed the flesh of its victims with a grin on its face. It has poisoned the souls of many and destroyed the lives of many more. It hasn't even spared our children.  Sought after for long is a cure for this disease. But with no breakthroughs after so many years, it has only grown more vicious and contagious. The steep rise in the number of lives it affects and the brutality with which it strikes has us all wondering what has gone wrong? The ever "responsible" media offers a cure. The death penalty !...
