Astrology, the science of keeping us Blind !

Many centuries for now, Astrology has led men in wrong directions, and simply men have kept faith on them and followed them, losing their way. It has been perceived and in fact, has become a kind of faith something similar to a religion, rather than being seen as a science. This has not happened overnight. If civilization dates back to 4500 B.C., so does astrology. It has been proved that Egyptians built their pyramids, only after taking into heads, the positions of the Sun, Moon, Planets, Stars , Constellations and all named, unnamed celestial bodies. It will not be centuries before our fellow men start designing their toilets based on the position of stars. It may well happen within our lifetimes. Today, we all wake up to read our daily fortunes in newspapers, televisions, and even on the web. Most of the social networking sites have started to feature them. One day, when i stepped into one of these sites, my fortune for the day read, "You will be slapped by a girl today. Better...

Reservation in Education ! Is it the right way ?

Sixty years ago, when my nation was starting to breathe free air, the leaders of the new-born nation had to fight untouchability , an evil spirit feeding on the Unity among the people. Nine out of ten literates were Brahmins . Ten out of ten government employees belonged to forward class. Backward class (including SC, ST) people were destined to third class jobs. They were rag pickers, shoe menders, undertakers, animal cleaners, laundry labours, house servants and worse, beggars. So, the leaders came up with a solution(0f course , a short term one) to help these people to top positions. Reservation. Be it Job, education and what not, reservation is in place, 63 years after Independence. Is it Good? Well, it is in fact , good in some sense. Village students, who are not exposed to brilliant training, rich schools and the outside world, get a chance to explore. Poor kids, who do not have money to undertake extensive coaching before an entrance, get a chance to see college. For a moment...

Writing is a dangerous activity !

I started writing, long before i was into blogging. When i look back to see where it all started.... I can't see it. Maybe i need a telescope. Oh ! not that distant, then at least a small magnifying glass. I started writing in my school days. My first writing was for a skit. Since no one was willing to write, i stepped forward into the shoes of a script write. The skit didn't have much glamour or a good language. Somehow i managed a theme and related it to current events. the skit was written overnight and did not have a big reception either. But i was happy, and felt writing was easy. But that was it. I had to wait a year, for my brain, to put another word on paper. In college, I started writing poems in my mother tongue, Tamil. Each fifteen to thirty lines, requiring only a couple of hours of my day. I had only one guy, who was ready to listen to them or rather i was ready to recite to only him. I kept writing day in and day out. I hoped the time required to compile the same...

The Hard working Ant and the Lazy Grasshopper !

Image
Everyone who can read/write/understand some language would have come across this story, where an ant works all summer to save something for the winter, whereas the grasshopper makes fun of the ant during summer and suffers all winter. I came across a modified version of the story, an Indian version, which was thought-provoking. The first half remains the same and it had a second half where, grasshoppers protest against the happy and the well-fed ants, while they were suffering. And all those Eagles (obviously, our wonderful politicians), marched behind these lazy hoppers, confiscating all belongings of the ants. These tired ants flee India to America, where they succeed by large, whereas India is still developing. On the first read, it seemed to be very true. The hardworking middle class brings in all incomes to the country, which are used to donate colour TVs and gas stoves to the "so-called" poor. A farmer, puts in all his 6 month effort to produce rice, which he has to sel...

Earth is the Centre of our Solar System !

Yes, you read it right. But, before you jump to any conclusions, let me make clear that, Galileo was right, when he said, "Sun is the centre of our Solar System". It is in fact true. But, only physically. But in another perspective, I am right. When it comes to the amount of activity going on, Earth is definitely the centre. Then, is the Sun for the Earth or the Earth for the Sun? A question that may come dashing into your mind. You may say, my class II geography teacher, told me Earth revolves around the sun. So the Earth is for Sun. But imagine, Sun without Earth. It will just be a giant ball of Helium and Hydrogen, foolishly spinning around itself. The planets would have looked even more foolish, revolving around a jobless sun, jobless themselves. But suddenly, introduce Earth into its orbit. The sun has job, 24 hours a day. It has to help plants with their photosynthesis, provide all living beings with heat and light(free of cost), has to help Earth in creating seasons b...

Dogs and Indians are not allowed Inside !

Hung up on the walls of hotels, clubs and pubs, 70 years back, in the same Indian soil, was a sign board containing this very message. The British East India Company ruled India. It plundered all wealth this nation had and packed them home. Indians were considered inferior to dogs and were massacred across the whole nation. Dogs were prosecuted better. We, Indians fought 90 years for a single cause, The Indian Dream. Is that dream being realized. In the field of education, India has had an increasing literacy rate every year since independence. Thousands of students fly abroad, every year, for their higher studies. The universities in many countries depend on Indians for their regular operation. India, by itself produces more number of doctors and engineers, every year, than the population of many countries. In the field of science, we are equipped to launch indigenous ships into space and observe moon. We have our own nuclear technology, biological labs, software solutions and what n...

My Angel - age 10 !

Our Family used to travel to a town called Kanya kumari, the southern tip of India, once in two years, when i was a kid. It was one of those trips. A five hour journey. I was about 8 and the instincts of a man started showing up in me. We were travelling in a day train, with 4+2 seater compartments . We(our family of four) occupied a whole compartment. This is where i saw her. The next compartment in our coach was occupied by a North Indian Family(well, it looked like one for my eyes). A big fat father and a fatter mother were seated on one side. On the opposite were their three children. Two boys, one about my age and the other a couple of years younger. There she was. Seated diagonally opposite to her parents, clearly visible to me, holding a piece of sweet in her hand. She was wearing a horizontal-striped T-shirt and a blue jean. She had a boy cut or her hair has grown only that much, which i couldn't find out. She was taller than me and that was how i guessed her age to be 10. ...
